When deciding to do any kind of body-altering procedure, it is crucial to do ample research on your potential practitioners. Skipping this step can leave you with irreversible damage.
The first criteria on your list should obviously be: do you like their work? Not all artists are made equal, so make sure you pick one that produces the kind of result you’re going for. If you’re looking to get your brows done, pay attention to their stroke patterns, shading effects, and color choice. Make sure to check out their healed results, as fresh brows can sometimes be misleading. Want to upgrade your smile? There are many different lip blushing techniques that each create their own look, from soft & natural to full-blown lipstick. Make sure you find an artist that practices the style you’re looking for. Don’t forget to check out their reviews!

Now that you’ve narrowed your search, it’s time to get into the details. It seems like almost anyone can get into PMU nowadays, so it’s important to make sure the artist you choose is certified by training with a *skilled* accredited school or instructor. Permanent cosmetics is much more than a pattern you can teach yourself by scrolling through social media. It requires in-depth knowledge on skin anatomy, proper depth & penetration, stretching techniques, and so much more.
"Always remember, you get what you pay for."
But being a legit PMU artist doesn’t end there. Laws vary from state to state, but in California, this is what needs to go down. To legally, and safely, practice permanent cosmetics, you need to be licensed by the County/State and meet multiple requirements. Not only does the artist need their own Body Art Practitioner license, but they also need to be working out of a facility that has passed an inspection and been awarded a Body Art Facility Permit as well.

If you show up to your appointment, and the environment does not seem clean and professional, or your artist isn’t wearing proper personal-protective-equipment as the procedure is beginning, stop in your tracks! That is usually an indicator that you will be leaving with results that you did not ask for. Doing plenty of research prior to picking your artist will help you avoid a situation like this.
So now that you’re a pro in picking a well-qualified artist to beautify your face, I’ve got one more tip. Don’t be afraid of the price tag. It is expensive to be a legit, well-qualified PMU artist, and to maintain a safe & legal working space. Not to mention the price tag on some of these training courses. Not everyone can do this, and even less can do it well, so always remember, you get what you pay for.
